European Rally Champion Miko Marczyk has set a new world record for the longest distance driven on a single tank of fuel.

Behind the wheel of a Skoda Superb, the Polish driver covered an impressive 2,831 kilometres without refuelling, achieving an average fuel consumption of just 2.61 litres per 100 kilometres.

The record-setting drive was completed in a standard Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI with 147 hp, a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive.

The car remained largely stock, aside from Sportline springs that lowered the chassis by 15 millimetres to improve aerodynamics. With a full 66-litre fuel tank, the Superb delivered exceptional range thanks to its efficiency-focused setup and low rolling-resistance tyres.

Marczyk, who spends over 120,000 kilometres behind the wheel each year, planned the record attempt meticulously. He maintained an average speed of around 80 km/h, used Eco mode to smooth out throttle response and gear shifts, and drove with a focus on maintaining momentum rather than frequent braking. Tire pressure, anticipation, and smooth acceleration were key elements in his approach.

The drive was carried out under real-world conditions across Europe, with sections in Germany proving challenging due to cold night-time temperatures and long uphill stretches. On the return leg through France, tail-winds helped reduce fuel consumption to as low as 2.2 litres per 100 kilometres.

For the attempt, Marczyk used regular diesel fuel, but he believes the 3,000-kilometre mark is within reach using premium fuel and slightly better conditions. The record underscores both the efficiency of modern diesel engines and the importance of driving technique in maximizing range.

This isn’t Marczyk’s first fuel-efficiency achievement. He previously drove 730 kilometres from Zakopane to the Baltic Sea in a Skoda Enyaq electric SUV without recharging and covered 108 kilometres from Zakopane to Krakow in a Skoda Octavia RS iV plug-in hybrid using just one litre of petrol.

The Skoda Superb used for the record run featured a 2.0-litre diesel engine, which is not available in all markets. In Nepal, the Superb is offered only with a 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine in the Sportline trim, priced at Rs 1.69 crore.
